Studies on the Actions of Methylxanthines on the Gastric Secretion in the Rat

Abstract
The author studied the effects of methylxanthine on the gastric secretion and ulcer formation and obtained the following results.
1. Gastric secretion of rats collected in the stomach after pylorus ligation was analized. Both caffeine and aminophylline inhibited gastric secretion (volume, acid concentration and acid output), respectively. Caffeine was four fold more effective than aminophylline. However, the degree of inhibition by either caffeine or aminophyylline was dose-dependent.
2. In Shay rats, both caffeine and aminophylline also showed the dose-dependent inhibition in the formation of ulcers in the mucosa and rumen portions.
3. The restraint stress ulcer was not induced in the rumen but in the mucosa portion. The formation of stress ulcers was not prevented by small doses but by large doses of methylxanines.
It might be sumrrarized that there is a species differences in the action of methylxanthine on the gastric secretion.
